It’s no surprise Dr Bronwyn Evans AM sticks by the mantra ‘everyone’s an engineer’. As CEO of Australia’s peak engineering body Engineers Australia and recognised as one of the country’s 100 most influential engineers, she can’t understand why everyone doesn’t want to work in her chosen field.

A passionate advocate for getting more women into STEM, it's Dr Evans belief that all children, regardless of gender, have the potential to become engineers.

“It starts right back at the assumptions we make around the play activities of kids. Every four-year-old’s a budding engineer, you’ve only got to watch them play. But, then, the language we use can really change the way we interpret their play,” she tells Claire in this podcast.

With a love for new ideas and technologies and an electrical engineer by trade,

Dr Evans has over 35 year’s experience in various engineering roles, including at Cochlear and GE Healthcare, as well as non-executive board experience in the construction, medical technology, and digital business sectors.

This year she was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for “significant service to engineering, to standards and to medical technology”.

She is an Honorary Fellow of University of Wollongong and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a member of the Champions of Change STEM Group - working to boost the representation of women in leadership positions in STEM - and has also been recognised as a 100 Women of Influence.

In this podcast, Dr Evans talks about why it’s time to get the gender balance right in STEM, how COVID has paved the way for more technology reforms and why problem-solving engineers are the perfect fit for the boardroom.
